WINCHESTER AWARDED AIRPORT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM GRANT

September 15, 2026

WINCHESTER, VA – September 15, 2026:

Winchester Regional Airport Authority
(“Authority”) has been awarded a $7,053,560 grant through the Federal Aviation
Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP). The funding supports the third
and final phase of a multi-year program to relocate the airport’s parallel taxiway, ensuring the
airfield meets FAA design standards for large aircraft while also complying with requirements
for reliable all-weather navigation for all aircraft operating at the airport.
The project marks a significant milestone in the Authority’s long-term modernization strategy
that also included a new terminal building and aircraft parking apron. It also further
demonstrates the airport’s role as an economic generator for the Northern Shenandoah Valley,
underscored by the fact that a Frederick County contractor, W‑L Construction & Paving, Inc.,
was the low bidder for the project, keeping investment and job creation anchored within the local
community.

“This grant is the culmination of $45M in recent capital improvements that enhance aviation
safety, fosters economic development, and sets the stage for new opportunities,” said Authority
Chairman Bill Pifer. “By diligently executing our master plan in coordination with our strategic
partners, we have strengthened the airport’s position as a reliable asset to support the region’s
balanced growth,” he added.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2027.
